The phrase "if you build it they will come" holds true for Central Park of Morris County. Central Park has become a show ground of recreational activities. According to the Morris County Park Commission, soccer players, runners, roller hockey players, and handicapped softball players take to the fields weekly.
Located on a section of the Greystone property, the park features two all-season skating rinks, a challenger baseball field for disabled persons, a cross-country track course and parking areas. The County is now in the planning stages to add new playing fields for soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and field hockey, trails and hiking paths, and an off-leash dog park.
When the County purchased 300 acres of land on the Greystone property, its plan was to create a countywide sports and recreation destination. Since then the County has spent an estimated $10 million to transform approximately half of the land into Central Park of Morris County. The Morris County Park Commission manages Central Park of Morris County.
Central Park of Morris County was featured in the November 2008 issue of American City & County. The article, Greystone Turns Green, includes several quotes from Morris County Freeholder John Murphy and David Helmer, executive director of the Morris County Park Commission:
"There has been a real move in New Jersey to conserve, preserve, purchase and maintain open space," said John Murphy, Morris County Freeholder. "It's good for quality of life, [and] that area in Morris County is already very intensely developed."
